Orale! Mexican Kitchen

Mercado

Orale! Mexican Kitchen is a dining experience, one best enjoyed when you’re in a fun, upbeat, colorful mood. It’s a place to overload your senses: admire the art installations on the walls, engage your taste buds in innovative flavor combinations and talk loudly over the music while sipping on strong cocktails. Like a mini-party restaurant. Not that it’s a club—it’s definitely a restaurant—but you want to go there when feeling festive because the place just bleeds festivity.

Magic: Meet Your Local Magician

magic

I stopped by the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery (435 Newark Ave.) a few weeks ago for a concert. Yes. A Midsummer Night’s Scream Music Festival was an all-day affair on one of the the hottest days of the year, with many bands performing to raise money for the cemetery, which is not affiliated with any place of worship. But besides the live music, there were other types of entertainment. Here’s where I met Wesley of Wesley’s Magic. Wesley is an independent magician, willing to travel anywhere in New York and New Jersey to entertain guests at your event.

Wesley does strolling magic, also known as “walk around magic,” where the magician roams a room or at an event and performs for groups of spectators. He approached me and my puppy in the sweltering heat to show off some tricks. I was quite impressed. He got me over and over; I could not figure out his methods. What really impressed me though was that Wesley started his business from the ground up with no capital…he is a free agent like so many JC residents, myself included. If I were to host an event, which I don’t plan on doing anytime soon, I would totally hire him. His rates are bargain, starting at $200 for the hour, for the quality of his magicianry (is that a word?). Soon, he’ll be doing children’s shows, too. Disclaimer: I’m writing this because I want to—Wesley’s show was paid for by the Cemetery. Here’s to supporting local! Check out Wesley’s website here and his FB page here.

For cuteness purposes, my puppy really dug  the show, too (and thankfully didn’t dig up any of the buried bones).

Shakespeare in the Park Tomorrow 8/14

Shakespeare in the ParkComedy of Errors atNewport Green 8/19/12Shakespeare in the ParkComedy of Errors atNewport Green 8/19/12(pictures from last year’s “Comedy of Errors,” taken by Mark Wyville for the Newport Development team)

On Wednesday, August 14th, Hip to Hip Theatre Company presents Shakespeare in the Park. After much success last year, they return by demand this summer at Newport Green performing “The Tempest” at 7:30pm. For those of you who don’t know, Newport Green is a cozy green oasis/beach tucked away in Jersey City on the Hudson River overlooking the Manhattan Skyline. I stopped by last week on my walk home from downtown, and attended this cool family-friendly event in late July.

Shakespeare in the Park is also and has always been family-friendly, but this year, Hip to Hip will be offering a children’s program called “Kids & the Classics.” Show up thirty minutes before the performance, and company members will engage children of all ages in theater games, teach them the tenets of ensemble playing and introduce them to the elements of theater (script, scenery, lighting, makeup, costumes and acting). The kids will get excited about William Shakespeare’s plays and, as an added bonus, learn about audience etiquette as well.

“The Tempest” synopsis: After twelve years on a deserted island, a deposed Duke is now a mighty sorcerer. He raises a storm at sea, bringing within his grasp the enemies who robbed him of his dukedom. Shakespeare’s final masterpiece has it all: a shipwreck, conspiracy, magic, monsters, fairies, and love at first sight.

Rain Date: Thursday, August 15th, 7:30 p.m.
