Macbeth Saturday 8/17

MACBETH

The Hudson Shakespeare Company performs Macbeth live at The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery (435 Newark Ave.) at 7pm on Saturday, August 17th. Watch a classic put to the stage in this theatrical benefit for the cemetery, which is a 100% volunteer-operated space, having no house-of-worship affiliation and no city or state funding.

This performance is sure to knock you out of the park! So bring your friends, your family, your blankets (nights are starting to get chilly). You may think a cemetery is a creepy place to gather, especially at night, but Harsimus really is a neat spot. Read about my experience here.

There’s a suggested donation of $10 per person for the show. In the cemetery’s words: “Every month we need to raise between $2000 to $3000 just to operate & purchase equipment & supplies. If 300 people would donate only $10 each, we would be all set for the month of September! Please help our amazing restoration work by contributing today at http://www.jerseycitycemetery.org

Enjoy,

Magic: Meet Your Local Magician

I stopped by the Historic Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery (435 Newark Ave.) a few weeks ago for a concert. Yes. A Midsummer Night’s Scream Music Festival was an all-day affair on one of the the hottest days of the year, with many bands performing to raise money for the cemetery, which is not affiliated with any place of worship. But besides the live music, there were other types of entertainment. Here’s where I met Wesley of Wesley’s Magic. Wesley is an independent magician, willing to travel anywhere in New York and New Jersey to entertain guests at your event.

Wesley does strolling magic, also known as “walk around magic,” where the magician roams a room or at an event and performs for groups of spectators. He approached me and my puppy in the sweltering heat to show off some tricks. I was quite impressed. He got me over and over; I could not figure out his methods. What really impressed me though was that Wesley started his business from the ground up with no capital…he is a free agent like so many JC residents, myself included. If I were to host an event, which I don’t plan on doing anytime soon, I would totally hire him. His rates are bargain, starting at $200 for the hour, for the quality of his magicianry (is that a word?). Soon, he’ll be doing children’s shows, too. Disclaimer: I’m writing this because I want to—Wesley’s show was paid for by the Cemetery. Here’s to supporting local! Check out Wesley’s website here and his FB page here.

For cuteness purposes, my puppy really dug  the show, too (and thankfully didn’t dig up any of the buried bones).
