mic

The last Friday of every month (tonight!) marks a night of great comedy in Jersey City. I had the privilege of going to June’s show, thanks to finding out about this little gem by its organizer, Joe D’Allegro.

It featured performances by Aalap PatelChelsea WhiteDavid Foster, Ryan Rummel, Pat BryneNate Fernald and Gordon Baker-Bone at the Brightside Tavern. My friend and I laughed our tails off.

Tonight boasts Calise Hawkins (Comedy Central), Justin MurrayNhan DuKrystyna Hutchinson, and Andrew Hayward. Up-and-coming star Gordon Baker-Bone is hosting.

Tickets are $10.  Show is at 8pm; seating starts at 7pm. Reservations recommended. (201) 435-1234.

Go ahead and laugh,

Gridiron Glory Exhibit Opens Saturday!

An empty high school football field

Calling all football fanatics who are totally psyched that 2014’s Superbowl will be held at MetLife Stadium:

Liberty Science Center premieres its Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibit this Saturday, September 28th.

The exhibit tells a story of American sports, history and culture through various media. Relics, documents, photos, “rare artifacts,” interactive stations and a special section dedicated to our “Hometown Heroes”—the GIAnts and the Jets.

Highlights (taken from LSC‘s site) include:

  • The Tiffany’s-crafted Vince Lombardi Trophy
  • 1917 game ball used by Jim Thorpe
  • Items from the famed Immaculate Reception game
  • Jerseys worn by Mean Joe Green, Johnny Unitas, and many others

Of course, it wouldn’t be complete without players. A full roster of former NY Giants and NY Jets will be stopping by to participate in science demonstrations and sports challenges with visitors. Plus, they’ll do a meet and greet afterward.

FASHION ON THIS SIDE OF THE RIVER. FOR THOSE LATE TO THE 6th BOROUGH GAME, OF COURSE!

Jersey City Fashion Week starts tomorrow, Wednesday, September 25th.

JCFW will spotlight some of the most imaginative and talented emerging designers all while giving industry insiders and fashion lovers a glimpse into Jersey City’s vibrant social and cultural scene. Throughout the week (technically four days), there will be fashion shows, charity functions, cultural events, cocktail parties and networking receptions.

The opening reception will be at VB3 (475 Washington Blvd.), Thursday September 26th. Mix and mingle with designers, models and photographers from 6-11pm. $30 in advance; $40 at the door.

Friday will be particularly fabulous with the “Night of Lights” (JC’s version of that other city’s Fashion’s Night Out), where participating shops and restaurants offer discounts to patrons, with the goal of showcasing fashion, dining and fun in the historic downtown Jersey City area.

Other events include: A children’s fashion show, a women of influence reception, emerging designer show and a style tips soiree. Here’s the list of designers showcasing.

Jersey City Fashion Week is a program derived from the foundation Give to Live Community Foundation, dedicated to promoting awareness for charitable causes. Last year, the Foundation donated $3,600 between various charities such as; Dress for Success, Boys and Girls Club, York Street Project and Art House Production, all located in Hudson County.

This year, JCFW and Give to Live we will donate part of the proceeds to Rising Tide Capital , Uneeek Inspiration and The Hope Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. Rising Tide helps people in the community create and maintain businesses while Uneeek Inspiration gives hope to children of parents who are incarcerated. The Hope Center gives children in Jersey City an opportunity to grow in the arts. Join in on the fun and help those less fortunate in our great city.

I love me some sparkle—even better if it’s for charitable causes.
