Con Vivo Celebrates Earth Day [This Sunday!]

Con Vivo Music will celebrate Earth Day weekend with a unique performance of “Not Less Than the Good,” a 60-minute musical sunrise and celebration of morning as embraced by Henry David Thoreau in “Walden” at the Barrow Mansion (83 Wayne St.), this Sunday at 6pm. The concert is free; all ages welcome.

“Not Less Than the Good” simulates a sunrise by combining the meditative playing of the saxophone quartet with ambient synthesizers. The music grows from a single quiet note, adding notes and timbres, growing in fullness and depth, much like the literature does with words (Ed. note: I’m only making that comparison because I wrote a term paper on “Walden” while at NYU).

Underneath this are real, pre-recorded sounds during the pre-dawn and early morning hours at Walden Pond: a chorus of insects, the lone song of dawn’s first bird which is joined by others in a raucous counterpoint, and the splashing of morning swimmers.

And keeping even further in trend with Beyonce, the hour-long performance is punctuated by readings of excerpts from “Walden”, considered a secular prayer of hope for enlightenment, that are narrated by poet J. D. McClatchy.

Dulce de Leche Bakery

Dulce de Leche Jersey City

Dulce de Leche in the Heights (376 Central Ave.) is my new favorite hangout spot in Jersey City and here’s why:

Awesome espresso and coffee is just the beginning.
dulce-du-leche

The space is big and bright, thanks to the high ceilings and lighting, and is perfectly upscale while still being welcoming of the mixed clientele. The staff is a bit flummoxed, as they are still figuring it out, but so are the customers, who are still figuring out where they now live or figuring out the changing landscape of where they have always lived.

2017: New Year, Better You

goals2

Happy New Year Jersey City!!

Whatever your goals are, my advice is to pick one thing and achieve that. You cannot do 10 things really well at once. But YOU CAN do one thing really well if you focus on that for life-improvement. Once you’ve mastered the first goal, tackle something else. Keep it simple.

There is room for improvement throughout the year. Here are some Jersey City spots to find your “A-ha” inspiration during every quarter of 2017.

Jersey City Wine Fest!

Jersey City is hosting its first “Wine Fest.”

If you personally know the gal behind JCG, you know that (sparkling) wine is my beer, so I’m excited to announce an event for my peeps that came about as a natural progression from this fall’s very successful Brewfest.

January is a droning drag. Why not sip a little with friends and neigbzz on this side of the Hudson while admiring the Manhattan skyline? I thought so.

Taste over 150 styles of wine (choose wisely, because that’s an impossible feat in such a brief time) from all over the world. Speak with winery representatives. Enjoy sommelier seminars on various vino topics. Eat fabulous foods and enjoy live music.

Deets:

* January 28th (Saturday)
