Con Vivo Music Gala

Con Vivo Music logoCon Vivo Music was rooted in the belief that live classical music should be available to the Jersey City public (and really, everyone) for free.

Eight years and sixty concerts later, their intial mission is still growing at a rapid pace. To fund the all-volunteer group, they host several events throught the year. This Saturday, October 24th is perhaps one of their biggest fundraisers: A gala at none other than the historic Barrow Mansion.

Con Vivo’s 2015 season included a build-your-own instruments kids show, a Bach concert, a program featuring Jersey City based composers, and a 7-part modern opera called Perfect Lives Jersey City.

Welcome to this year: Music by Pulitzer-prize winning composer Caroline Shaw, a world premiere composition by CVM’s own Mazz Swift, Bela Bartok string duets, and Lansing McLosky’s beautiful Processione di Lacrime for string trio and alto sax. Music will be performed by Amelia Hollander Ames (viola), Mazz Swift (violin), Marika Hughes (cello), and Zach Herchen (saxophone). There will also be a celebration with music, cocktails, light food, and a silent auction.

Art & Studio Tour 2015

Studio Tour 2013

The 25th annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour kicks off tonight, Jersey City! Perhaps one of the most anticipated events in Jersey City, JCAST (as it’s referred to by residents) is set to make even more of a mark this year.

JCAST features over 800 artists during its weekend-long event. It’s not only a great opportunity to meet your local artists and purchase unique pieces at reasonable prices, it’s a fine time to get to know your neighbors, government officials and connect with the burgeoning city’s ever-growing diverse community of eclectic citizens.

Wings

Tonight is the kick-off opening gala presented by Mayor Steven Fulop, the JC Municipal Council and the Office of Cultural Affairs at the JCAST Flagship Gallery Pop-up at the Lackawanna Center (629 Grove Street). Free transportation is provided via shuttle bus from the Grove Street PATH every half hour from 7pm-11pm and by Lyft (code: JCAST2015). Parking is available on-site in adjacent lots: 16th and Grove Street and 18th Street between Grove St. and Jersey Ave. Or take advantage of our newly-installed Citi Bikes at stations: JC009 & JC034. Directions here.

The event is free and open to the public, and offers an array of entertainment for all ages: Interactive fun provided by Hudson County Art Supply; Film Screenings by the Jersey City International Television and Film Festival; Small bites from The Hamilton Inn, The Kitchen at Grove Station, and Mill Creek. And then for the 21+ crowd: Adult bevvies provided by Raval, Satis Bistro, and Lucky 7’s.

Not a real window

Find out about all Saturday and Sunday showings here. I always try to soak up as much as I can, but it is nearly impossible to see everything over the two days; choose wisely and plan well. If you somehow make it to every stop, please let me know!

Here are some of my past memories from JCAST weekend.

La Festa Italiana

La Festa Italiana

There are only two more days to enjoy the fabulousness of La Festa Italiana in downtown Jersey City. Today (8/15) and tomorrow (8/16).

La Festa Italiana in Jersey City began in 1902 as a street festival in honor of Our Lady of the Assumption (August 15) & St. Rocco (August 16), both days of which were venerated by thousands of parishioners at Holy Rosary Church in Historic Downtown Jersey City – Celebrating 130 Years as the First Italian Parish in the State of New Jersey!

Enjoy: live music, games, merchandise, raffles, and fabulous Italian food outside of Holy Rosary Church along 6th Street between Brunswick & Monmouth Streets.
