Con Vivo celebrates an evening of song this Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church (440 Hoboken Ave., Jersey City) at 5pm.
Con Vivo will celebrate the art song with mezzo-soprano Sarah Nelson Craft and pianist Paul Vasile! This varied and beautiful program includes music by Benjamin Britten, Claude Debussy, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Schubert, and George Gershwin.
Ms. Craft has performed at the Caramoor Festival, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, China’s Macau International Music Festival, with the New Jersey Festival Orchetra, on NPR’s This American Live live at BAM, and more. We’re excited to have her performing for Con Vivo before she travels to Paris to participate in “The Song Continues: Paris Residency” presented by Carnegie Hall at the Opéra Bastille.
Mr. Vasile’s wide-ranging talents and musical interests provide frequent opportunities to perform as a pianist, conductor and concert organist. He has performed in his own recitals of American Romantic organ music in Germany, Latvia and in New York City, including several performances on the historic Appleton pipe organ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Celebrate the summer solstice with a concert by Con Vivo! On Saturday, June 21, the orchestra will be performing Karlheinz Stockhausen’s epic work Tierkreis, a 12 movement piece based on the Zodiac signs, starting with current sign Gemini and moving forward through the year. This loosely planned program is sure to delight in its uniqueness. Soak it all in on the waterfront at J. Owen Grundy Pier’s Outdoor bandshell by Exchange Place.
Rhymes With Opera presents “Red Giant” to Jersey City this Sunday, January 19th at 2pm in the Barrow Mansion (83 Wayne St.). “Red Giant” is a one-act opera and a surreal story set in the future, taking place inside a spaceship on a journey to an unknown destination. As the sun slowly explodes and engulfs their former planet, the three humans onboard reflect on both the futility of their search for a new home and their need for a sense of hope.
Rhymes With Opera (RWO) is an ensemble dedicated to commissioning and producing new operas, and this fully staged performance of New Haven composer Adam Matlock and librettist Brian Slattery’s work will be presented in a brand-new orchestration, written especially for RWO’s house band, Rhymes With Orchestra.
The production also includes a special world premiere: a concert presentation of Baltimore composer Erik Spangler’s “Damascus Mix”, developed through a long-distance collaboration between the composer and RWO ensemble member Bonnie Lander. The live vocal part emerges from a cut-up of international news reports; the music stretches beyond our idea of “language,” while defining a unified field between the human voice and electronically generated sound.
Con Vivo Music celebrates its 7th season with their 2013 Gala at the Barrow Mansion (83 Wayne St.) this Friday! Get dressed to the nines and perk up your ears for some fabulous Brazilian music at 8pm.
Con Vivo, in their own words, “is a collective of musicians including some of the NYC area’s finest soloists and rising stars. We bring the communal spirit of chamber music to the vibrant and unique setting of Jersey City, organizing and performing free concerts all over town.”
For this night of music, bassist Andrew Roitstein will showcase his arrangements of popular Brazilian tunes, performed by Jersey City guitarist Martin Moretto (founder of Yellow Frog Soul Sessions); Karla Donehew-Perez (violinist of the internationally acclaimed Catalyst Quartet); Zach Herchen (saxophonist and Con Vivo’s new artistic director); CVM favorite Nick Gallas; and Amelia Hollander Ames (viola).
The ensemble will play Andrew’s arrangements of popular Brazilian songs by Pixinguinha, Milton Nascimento, and Chico Buarque, plus a sneak peak at our June performance of Stockhausen’s epic Zodiac sign piece, “Tierkreis.”
Andrew, Nick and Amelia Hollander Ames will play Judd Greenstein’s “Summer Dances,” one of the selections from Con Vivo’s upcoming, Kickstarter-funded CD release “Modern Dances.”
Zach Herchen will perform 2013 Guggenheim fellow Kati Agócs’ virtuosic solo saxophone piece “As Biddeth Thy Tongue.”
After the performance, there will be raffles for: A weekend getaway to the Poconos; tickets to performances by Nimbus Dance Works and Rhymes With Opera; merchandise from local businesses Kanibal Home and JC Made; a signed novel by Emily Barker; CDs by Jersey City musicians; Con Vivo T-shirts; and a Con Vivo hand-made sweater! Taking Better Pictures with DSLRis a two-day course taught by local photographer Alex Pergament from 12pm to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday at Riverview Fisk Park. Registration for the classes closes today, FRIDAY, June 14th. Saturday’s about decrypting the settings on your camera and choosing the best settings for your shooting style and subject. Sunday concentrates on composition, perspective and depth. The cost is $50 for one day and $80 for both.
