12.6.13 Tree Lighting at the Cemetery

 tl hc

Yet another tree lighting in Jersey City! The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery (436 Newark Ave.) hosts its annual Christmas tree lighting and caroling tonight, Friday, December 6th, at 7:30pm.

The Yuletide Carolers of New Jersey and a few surprise guests will be performing. Dress warmly, bring the fam, and please sing along.

As I always say about this non-church affiliated, non-government property, donate if you can. In the cemetery’s words: “Every month we need to raise between $2000 to $3000 just to operate and purchase equipment & supplies. If 300 people would donate only $10 each, we would be all set for the month!” Please help our amazing restoration work by contributing today at http://www.jerseycitycemetery.org.

Holiday cheer is here,

Poetry Reading: Saturday 11/16/13

Redwheel6_090513

The Red Wheelbarrow poets are all reading from their latest book, “The Red Wheelbarrow Volume #6,” this Saturday, November 16th at Tachair Bookshoppe (260 Newark Ave. by Monmouth Ave.) at 4pm. Literature lovers, you won’t want to miss this event.

The Red Wheelbarrow group meets for writing workshops in Rutherford, the hometown of William Carlos Williams (author of “The Red Wheelbarrow”), and periodically publish an anthology of their collective work. After the poetry reading, there will be a book signing and open-mic session.

“Tachair,” Jersey City’s only independent bookstore, derived its name from a Scottish-Gaelic word meaning “to meet.” The family-owned business uses their space to encourage education and community gatherings over conversation, creativity and the arts. They sell not only new and used books, as well as art from local artists. Tachair also has a cafe to promote the connectivity among people of all ages and walks of life that co-exist in our diverse city.

Shakespeare in the Cemetery this Weekend

shakespeare

The Hudson Shakespeare Company performs the tragedy Titus Andronicus live at The Historic Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery (435 Newark Ave.) at 7pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 18th, 19th, 20th). Watch a classic put to the stage in this theatrical benefit for the cemetery, which is a 100% volunteer-operated space, having no house-of-worship affiliation and no city or state funding.

This performance is sure to knock you out of the park! So bring your friends, your family, your sweaters and blankets (nights are chilly), and arrive early as seating is limited. You may think a cemetery is a creepy place to gather, especially at night, but Harsimus is really a neat spot. Read about my experience here.

If you are in for more of a scare, immediately following the performances there will be a “Ghosts & Legends” Tour, which involves underground vaults.

Food and wine available on site.

Donation of $10 per person for the show, extra for the ghost tour. Please donate more if you are able to afford it so we can keep the historic site up and running.

In the cemetery’s words: “Every month we need to raise between $2000 to $3000 just to operate and purchase equipment & supplies. If 300 people would donate only $10 each, we would be all set for the month!” Please help our amazing restoration work by contributing today at http://www.jerseycitycemetery.org
