5 Fashion Trends for Risk-Takers

Spring has sprung in Jersey City, yet it’s been cold, gray and rainy almost daily for the past month — which only makes all of us more anxious to break out a new look. So while you stay in hibernation and continue spring cleaning, consider the new pieces you’d like to add to your wardrobe. Suzy Walsh, style blogger at The House Of Elegance Fashionoffers bold trends to try (and please add some color to yours, for my sake:)

5  Fashion Trends for Risk-Takers
Fashion is not always about wearing a summery dress or pairing some graphic T-shirt with jeans. The evolution of fashion is rapid, and youngsters have some of the quirkiest styles. You just never know what turns into a trend overnight — one day you wake up and every woman is sporting it. Here are the 5 most radical styles at the moment that only risk-takers can pull off.

1. The Corset Craze

[Image credit for all celeb photos in the article: Elle.com]

Corsets have been a part of history, and the return has been shocking. Women were initially wearing tight corsets around their waist to shed some pounds, and now they are seen sporting it above clothes as a trend. The trend is seriously getting out of hand as women are pressurizing their waistline to fit into one. If you are comfortable wearing it, go ahead and give it a try. Pair with knee-high boots if you are donning it with a shirt or any of your favorite dresses. Get the look in Jersey City: Naughty and Nice Lingerie

2. Velvet Meets Leather and Faux Fur

Sounds confusing right? Well, we were taken aback when we had seen unique fashionista Rihanna sporting this trend, but somehow it made sense. This is a perfect mixed-weather date night outfit if you want to keep it sexy yet casual. If you have a sleeveless deep necked velvet dress, wear it with your leather faux fur jacket. If the date doesn’t go well, you can always hit the club with this attire! Mix materials without fear: Graffiti and Gold

3. Glam Jammies

Did you ever think that your pajamas could be a fashion statement? Guess what, they are! You can totally wear a pajama jumpsuit with a lapel or trench coat, along with a statement choker and slicked-back hair. Add your pumps that best complement the attire to complete the look. This may be an unusual style, but it is super comfy and something anyone can take a risk with. Another Man’s Treasure usually has “glammies” in stock.

4. Stockings Over Shoes

Do you have a gorgeous strapless thigh-high gown for prom or an upcoming event? Have you considered trying the stocking trend? Yes, Bella Hadid wore stockings with her custom-made gown on the red carpet. Surprisingly, the stockings were worn over her shoes, which made for a a super cool look. It’s a trend everyone can easily try, especially the risk-takers who love experimenting. Get your stockings at Tia’s Place.

5. Lace-up Pants

Lace-up pants in denim and leather have become extremely famous, thanks to the #squad supermodels. If you love the look in leather, take the risk down a notch. Be clashy and pair them with a plaid shirt like Kim Kardashian, or be clean and choose a neutral, basic cotton top (no patterns, no more leather) so that the pants take the spotlight. Head to F21 at the Newport Mall to snag a pair of leather lace-up pants.

Bottom line: Play around with the bold trends of 2017 to see if you can incorporate them into your own personal style.

Whatever your goals are, my advice is to pick one thing and achieve that. You cannot do 10 things really well at once. But YOU CAN do one thing really well if you focus on that for life-improvement. Once you’ve mastered the first goal, tackle something else. Keep it simple.

There is room for improvement throughout the year. Here are some Jersey City spots to find your “A-ha” inspiration during every quarter of 2017.

A Fun Way To Support Local Businesses

smallOne of my friends loves to buy things she thinks are interesting at various markets or shops with no one in mind, but so that she can gift them to someone one day… when the right person matches the right gift. She feels no buyer’s remorse guilt—and, she also can choose something at the last minute for a houseawarming or dinner party that’s always cool and unique.

I was thinking about this a few months ago when I stopped by JC Made and saw this amazing shirt in the window that I was gifted the week before (and coincidentally, as I wasn’t planning on stopping there, almost wore it that very day), and yet again when I dropped by Pig & Pepper on my way home, because I interviewed the owner for the Jersey City Independent and wanted to explore their inventory.

Even though I couldn’t afford to shop at the time, I love the store and bought an inexpensive gift and card for a friend…any good friend. I’m going to wait until there’s an occasion…her birthday or job promotion or whatever (my gift is a girly gift), however, it is unique, she will not be able to find it anywhere else, and for those reasons it will be uniquely perfect.

How many times have you showed up at a friend’s house with a bottle of wine or a dessert or a trinket you picked up last-minute? And how unoriginal does that feel? No judgment. It’s happens to the best of us.

Ladies and gents, here is where you have your anytime shopping excuse. And here is when you SHOP LOCAL, in Jersey City, or course. We have hundreds of quite fantabulous local businesses with unique finds and even if the item references JC doesn’t mean you can’t buy it for someone who lives elsewhere. Our city is the best, spread the love, and represent us and or stores with a token that they will never forget because it’s from where you’re from…they will never forget you.

But I digress. The authenticity does not have to say anything about JC, but you, as a citizen here, do. You will do no wrong buying locally because everyone wins. The shops profit, you don’t have to feel guilty for spending money on things that are cool but that you may not normally buy, and your friends will think you’re the most rad, cutting-edge person, ever.

Ironically, while you can’t get the perfect thing for a person all of the time, when you have an aresenal, you realize you have the perfect thing. (Or you see the perfect thing but it’s not the right time…no occasion, but you buy and save it for the future.)

Back to School!

IMAG4556

After selling most of my stuff at the Riverview Fisk Flea Market two weeks ago, I felt justified to buy new things.

Even though it’s been a while since I’ve gone “back to school,” this time of year is a great time to revamp your life and begin a new chapter.

New season, new things. Right? I rarely buy for myself, but it is just high time that I do. My sneakers are failing me. My clothing is getting thready. My iPod and phone are both glitchy. My jewelry just bores me. And I really, really want a bike.

I began my new (frugal) shopping spree with a corduroy bomber jacket, two skirts and a new sketchbook/journal. The hair-bows are from the 6th Borough Market.

IMAG4474

I then bought some things (T-shirts, candle, soaps, lip balm, wristlets and baby headband) at the All About Downtown Street Fair. Most of these are gifts.

IMAG4559

The JC GAL bracelet is obvi not going to be gifted.
