Jersey City Documentary

five-finger-discount“Five-Finger Discount” is a documentary based on the national bestselling memoir about Jersey City by Helene Stapinski.

The saga chronicles the journey of a family – and of Jersey City itself – from a criminal and corrupt past to a reinvented and revitalized present, told from the unique perspective of a working-class woman who lived it.

You can learn more about the film, the book on which it’s based, and even see a short video sample here. Help them make this documentary a possibility by donating to their Kickstarter campaign here.

An Evening of Art Song 11/9/14

con vivo art songCon Vivo celebrates an evening of song this Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church (440 Hoboken Ave., Jersey City) at 5pm.

Con Vivo will celebrate the art song with mezzo-soprano Sarah Nelson Craft and pianist Paul Vasile! This varied and beautiful program includes music by Benjamin Britten, Claude Debussy, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Schubert, and George Gershwin.

Ms. Craft has performed at the Caramoor Festival, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, China’s Macau International Music Festival, with the New Jersey Festival Orchetra, on NPR’s This American Live live at BAM, and more. We’re excited to have her performing for Con Vivo before she travels to Paris to participate in “The Song Continues: Paris Residency” presented by Carnegie Hall at the Opéra Bastille.

Mr. Vasile’s wide-ranging talents and musical interests provide frequent opportunities to perform as a pianist, conductor and concert organist. He has performed in his own recitals of American Romantic organ music in Germany, Latvia and in New York City, including several performances on the historic Appleton pipe organ at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Jersey City Artists Studio Tour 10/18 & 10/19

art5

This weekend marks one of the most fabulous (one of my favorite) weekends in Jersey City—that of the Artists Studio Tour. Residents of Jersey City are invited to the homes/studios of Jersey City artists. You’ll view their work, chat with them and can purchase snappy new pieces to adorn your walls and tables.

It’s the weekend my Mom buys another Jesus or Mary silk-screened piece from Shawn Michael Lang (the artist of the above), my Aunt Jennifer takes me to Grigory Gurevich’s house and Barrow St. Mansion, and my boyfriend or best friend and I get separated at 150 Bay in different studio apartments.

The kick-off party is on Friday, October 17th at Owen J. Grundy Pier, and shows run from 10-6pm on Saturday 10/18 and Sunday 10/19 in various buildings around town.

Cheers,

Lucid Visions: Opening Reception 10/16

lucid_visionsThe opening reception of Lucid Visions is this Thursday, October 16th from 6-9pm at Panepinto Galleries (371 Warren St.)

Local and international artists based in Jersey City are represented in this collection of work that “challenges, unhinges and altogether shifts perception of what should be called a ‘real’ experience. The territory between wakefulness and the dream-state is one widely traversed by artists. From the elegantly surreal to the deftly tactile, these selected works speak to the endless possible deviations from reality as envisioned by an unfettered mind.”
